Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti
Releasing her debut I Thought I Was An Alien earlier this month, French songwriter and actress Soko has premiered a self-directed short film titled Monster Love.
Filmed in the Silverlake area of L.A., the story of a hapless monster attempting to find the love of his life is soundtracked by a song sharing the film’s title, a duet with area local Ariel Pink. “The whole thing was super DIY and felt like making a school project video with all my friends,” says Soko in an interview with Nowness.
The film also features the track “I Just Want to Make It New With You,” a song Soko says was directly inspired by her relationship with Pink. “We were friends, falling in love, but he was just out of a relationship and I—as always—was broken hearted,” she says. “We hadn’t shed the heaviness of our past. I imagined that after relationships, we all turn into some sort of monster, and only if we stop being monstrous will we ever be able to be real lovers again.”
