In December, an all-star band including Jody Stephens (Big Star), Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Mitch Easter (Let's Active), and Chris Stamey (the dB's) assembled to perform Big Star's classic 1978 album Third/Sister Lovers with an orchestra at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC. It was a momentous even in celebration of the life and legacy of the late Alex Chilton and his work with Stephens and Big Star.

For those not lucky enough to be in the vicinity of Carrboro for the event, another concert is planned for New York City next month. On March 26, Mills, Easter, Stamey, and Stephens will reconvene, this time with Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Will Rigby (the dB's), Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), Matthew Sweet, Tift Merritt, M. Ward, and The Lost in the Trees Orchestra with Jane Scarpantoni, Django Haskins (The Old Ceremony), Brett Harris, Sidney Dixon and Matt McMichaels, to perform Third in its entirety at Baruch College's Mason Hall. More special guests are expected, and the group will perform additional Big Star and Chris Bell songs along with the seminal Third.

Tickets go on sale this Thursday at 11:00 AM. Proceeds will benefit both the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and El Sistema NYC.
