Death Cab for Cutie are releasing a new album, Thank You For Today, on August 17 via Atlantic. Previously they shared a video for its first single, “Gold Rush,” and performed the song on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Usually a band releases a lyric video prior to the main video, but Death Cab for Cutie have done it the other way around and have now shared a lyric video for “Gold Rush.” It features frontman Ben Gibbard holding the lyrics on large cards, standing in the middle of the road, and discarding the cards one by one as the song progresses. It is, of course, reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s 1965 promotional film (proto music video) for “Subterranean Homesick Blues.” Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.

The new album will be their first not to feature any contributions from founding guitarist/producer Chris Walla, who left the band after the recording of their last album, 2015’s Kintsugi (which Walla didn’t produce, but did play on). It’s also the first album where cofounders Ben Gibbard and Nick Harmer, as well as longtime member Jason McGerr, were joined in the studio by newer members Dave Depper and Zac Rae, who have been touring members since 2015.

Last month the band announced some fall tour dates and shared a teaser video for the album, which seemed to indicate an August release and featured a snippet of new music.

One dollar from each ticket to the band’s tour purchased through the band’s website will be donated to The Aurora Commons, which a press release says is “a Seattle based non-profit organization which offers a safe space for unhoused neighbors to rest, prepare a meal, connect to resources, and collectively create a healthy and vibrant community.”
