This month Copenhagen-based trio Efterklang will release their latest LP Piramida on 4AD. The beginnings of the record occurred when members Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen and Rasmus Stolberg went on a nine-day expedition to the album’s titled ghost town, a former Russian settlement on the island of Spitsbergen located just shy of the North Pole. Abandoned overnight in the ‘90s and slowly decaying, the area provided a perfect spot to collect all kinds of audio samples. One of the record’s included songs, “Apples,” made available today as a free download, features an array of such manipulated sounds, including struck spikes protruding from concrete blocks, as well as a micro-recording of a grand piano still found standing in the town’s former concert hall.

The band issued a statement saying,“‘Apples’ was one of the first songs we wrote for the album after our return from the trip to Piramida. Like many of the other songs on the album ‘Apples’ is inspired by the cycle of human creations - that being creations like an entire city left to decay in the Arctic or the cycles of our interpersonal relationships in life. ‘Apples’ is mainly a song about letting go of love in the attempt of finding it again.” Click below to listen and download. Piramida arrives Sept. 24.
