On June 1-5, Marina Di Ravenna, Italy will host the fourth edition of Beaches Brew—a free festival featuring the Thee Oh Sees, Viet Cong, Shabazz Palaces, and more. To help us get in a sunny state of mind, we’re running a series of mixes from artists playing the fest. The next in the series comes from Dutch band Afterpartees.

“We put this mix together on a rainy spring night in our home town of Horst, in the Netherlands,” says the band of their picks. “Our town is about 250 kilometers away from the sea, so it’s safe to say we don’t know the beach that well, or beach life/culture for that matter (stuff like which speedos are *IN* this season and what hats to wear), but do know what songs we would like to play when promenading along the shores of Italy. After long deliberation we present our humble addition to the plethora of summer mixtapes…Stay safe on the beach, don’t make your sand-castles too much like real landmarks unless you want UNESCO on your case, and steer clear of the dark chocolate Cornettos (those are ours). See you in Italy, or someplace else.”

Listen below. You can also revisit our previous mix in the series from DJ Fitz here. If you’re headed to Italy, you can grab all the event details here.

Tracklist:

1. Boudewijn de Groot: Strand - The mix starts off with a track from our home country, ‘Strand,’ by the great Boudewijn de Groot, which is about drinking on the beach (strand is Dutch for beach).

2. Tacocat: Crimson Wave - One of our favorite tracks, ‘Crimson Wave’ by Tacocat, is a song about menstruation and sharks and summertime fun (I can relate to at least one of those things).

3. King Tuff: So Desperate - From his genre-breaking album Was Dead, an all-time great record.

4. The Shivvers: No Substitute - The 4th track is ‘No Substitute,’ by Milwaukee powerpop legends The Shivvers. We dig a lot of girl-centric power-pop songs, but this one, this is really something special. The melodies on this one… just.

5. Peach Kelli Pop: Plastic Love - Peach Kelli Pop released one of the best albums of 2015 so far and ‘Plastic Love’ is an absolute killer song about unrealistic expectations of girls, or a validation of fuck-doll fetishists (I’m pretty sure it’s the former). Also, it’s a banger.

6. Bare Wires: Don’t Ever Change - Matthew Melton (Bare Wires and of course Warm Soda) should be a millionaire. His hit song to breathing ratio is crooked and he should be dead or rich.

7. The Tubs: Strange - Next up it’s our good friends The Tubs, from Belgium. They rock. Their last tape is on Burger. It’s called Rag. You should listen to it.

8. Sheer Mag: Fan the Flames - Sheer Mag wrote the best song of the year, “Fan the Flames.” This is just pure powerpop/disco/rock heaven. The chorus swings like a Jackson 5 song. Resistance is futile.

9. The Barbaras: Breathing Underwater - The Barbaras write the best romantic choruses. I can see a Homecoming dance swingin’ to this now…we never had homecoming in the Netherlands, so I’m channeling US high school movies here.

10. Monster Rally: Honeymoon - This is a strange track, completely made out of loops. Insanely catchy though.

11. Lord Invader: Pepsi Cola - Lord Invader is such a metal name. Perfect for a black metal band, but it is Calypso instead. Pepsi-Cola vibes all the way from 1950’s Trinidad for all ya Coca-Cola fans.

12. Desmond Dekker: It’s Not Easy - Desmond Dekker. Love the sad-ish vocal on this one. For when the people on the beach need a song for the sad times.

13. Extra Classic: Whispering Leaves - This song reminds me of the Lion King in all the best ways possible. Simply put: a beautiful song. Must have played this in the triple digits last year.

14. Japanther: Something To Do - Party!

15. T-Rex: Teenage Dream - And closing out…Everyone on the Marc Bolan Express! Time for introspection. Look deep inside. What do you find? It’s a note. What does it say? It says: ‘I Like T-Rex.’ Thank you, note.
