Premiere: The Darcys Mixtape
Set to Play Under the Radar’s Third Day of SXSW Parties
Mar 12, 2013 The Darcys
Ahead of our three SXSW day parties, we asked a few of the bands performing to participate in our mixtape project. Check out the contribution from The Darcys, who used the opportunity to provide us with a rap primer.
“I don’t listen to enough rap,” says bandmember Wes Marskell. “It isn’t a natural repulsion but more a product of my lack of time and energy to seek out what’s important in the genre and stay current with what’s good. Growing up I could spit every verse of Wu-Tang’s Triumph, I had Liquid Swords, solo ODB, Dre, The Pillage and loved Cypress Hill. High school brought Outkast, Tribe, Del, and The Roots. Typical suburban kid shit ?uestlove was always important to me, as a band leader and when working with D’Angelo, but I didn’t stay with rap or even The Roots past The Tipping Point. Once Kid A made it to my radar it occupied my stereo for the next three years. By then, knowing the words to Triumph wasn’t so cool. So as I said, I don’t listen to enough rap. Fortunately our manager knows his verses and sends around his favorites from each year. We even had a little when-two-become-one moment when DOOM announced he was working with Thom Yorke back in 2011. Affectionately this playlist is called Rap Classics From Our Manager. The first are some of his essential cuts followed by the DOOM and Thom Yorke collaboration and Triumph in the 12 spot, just for old times sake.”
Check out the mix below. The Darcys will play Under the Radar’s second free SXSW, Thursday, March 14 at 4:05pm.
