The Flaming Lips To Premiere Musical This Year
Based on Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Mar 15, 2012 The Flaming Lips
According to a report in the Los Angeles Times The Flaming Lips will finally debut the long-gestating stage musical based on their 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots later this year. Written and directed by Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys), the work will open sometime in either November or December and take place at La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, California.
Hinted by frontman Wayne Coyne as a potential project for the past few years, the production has been in the works since 2007, with acclaimed writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network) at one point assigned to pen the book. Though titled after Yoshimi, select songs from The Soft Bulletin and At War With the Mystics will also be included, and, in typical Lips fashion, will feature plenty of “multimedia stage effects.” Stay tuned as more info emerges.
