After the dramatic conclusion to season three mini-series Children of Earth, it appeared all might be lost for the surviving members of Torchwood. Not so, as it was recently announced by the BBC and Starz that season four would be a joint production between the BBC and Starz networks. The new season will hit television summer of 2011 and will air on Starz in the U.S., rather than on BBC America.

What does that mean for viewers? Returning cast members Eve Myles (Gwen Cooper) and John Barrowman (Capt Jack Harkness) will be sent on a high budget, around the world adventure with new characters, countries, and adventures. The show will now have a more international feel to it, with characters from multiple countries and some of the plot will take place in America (whereas previous seasons were set exclusively in the U.K. and filmed mainly in Wales). Much like season three, season four will tell one long story, this time parceled out over 10 episodes. Torchwood creator Russell T Davis is involved and has written the season. The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Davis about the new season and he had this to say, “It’s very much the next step. It’s not a new version, it’s not a reboot. We’re simply moving countries. The show was previously a format showmonster of the week. The breakthrough was Children of Earth and that it became one long story. It’s not going to be ‘Lost’ and take 20 years to find out what’s going on. It’s going to have a most remarkable conclusion after 10 episodes.”
