Bristol trip-hop progenitors Massive Attack have a new EP, entitled Splitting the Atom, set for release October 5th in the U.S. and the U.K., on Virgin. The new EP will include four new tracks, two of which in remixed fashion. And all of the beat-heavy cuts feature a guest vocalist of some stripe. This follows in the great MA tradition of gathering outstanding guest vocalists for their albums. (For example, Elizabeth Fraser on “Teardrop”).

TV on the Radio‘s Tunde Adebimpe will lend his soul-rattling vox to the new song “Pray for Rain,” while reggae legend and longtime MA conspirator Horace Andy will grab the mic on the title track, which debuted tonight on Zane Lowe’s show on BBC Radio 1. Remixes include Van Rivers & the Subliminal Kid’s retouching of “Psyche,” with some aide from former Tricky muse Martina Topley-Bird. Additionally, Christoff Berg transforms “Bulletproof Love” with Elbow’s Guy Garvey.

More information on the new release can be gleaned from the www.massiveattack.ie fansite. The strange artwork for Splitting the Atom can be seen on the right.

Meanwhile, Massive Attack’s next proper album, “LP5” or Weather Underground, is currently being mixed/mastered by the band and can be expected winter 2010. They’re also tourinng a ton in Europe this fall. (Via Pitchfork)
