Part 3 of Under the Radar‘s Holiday Gift Guide 2017 features various DVDs and Blu-rays released in 2017. We didn’t have space to feature everything in one post, so below are full entries on four DVDs/Blu-rays we couldn’t fit, along with a longer list of other DVDs and Blu-rays we wanted to highlight but couldn’t do full write-ups on.

They include classic movies and TV shows either coming to DVD or Blu-ray for the first time or getting new reissues with fresh bonus features. There are also more current movies and TV shows hitting home media for the first time this year. There are handy links to buy each item.

We have previously posted part 1 of our 2017 gift guide (for music reissues, music box sets, and vinyl), as well as part 2 (for board games). Over the next week and a half we’ll also be posting more gift guides relating to collectibles, toys and other gifts for kids, books and graphic novels, technology, and household items and apparel. Blake Edwards’ The Pink Panther Film Collection Starring Peter Sellers Blu-ray (Shout! Factory)

Few comedy characters are as iconic as Peter Sellers’ famed Inspector Clouseau, whom he played in six Pink Panther films directed by the great Blake Edwards from 1963 to 1983. An unflappable nincompoop, Clouseau always maintained a serious demeanor in spite of his extreme clumsiness and brilliant incompetence. The Pink Panther films are a compulsively binge-able series, and Shout! Factory’s new Blu-ray set is a fantastic way to do just that. Every film arrives in a great transfer and on its own disc packed with extra features, from audio commentaries to documentaries, interviews, trailers, and still galleries. Collecting the five movies Sellers appeared in, The Pink Panther Film Collection Starring Peter Sellers brings together all the essential entries of one of the all-time best comedy franchises in one package. COPS: The Complete Series DVD (Mill Creek Entertainment)

SRP: $19.98

COPS is purely a nostalgic purchase. If you were a kid in the 1980s there’s a chance you watched it after school and even owned the toys. In the fact the show was based on the 1988 Hasbro toy line, officially known as COPS ‘n’ Crooks. The show aired in 1988 and 1989 and took place in the future, hence the tagline “Fighting crime in a future time.” Basically it’s about a team of futuristic police officers, each with different gadgets, skills, and vehicles fighting fairly dumb criminals. The show may not hold up particularly well (Blade Runner it isn’t), but if you watched it as a kid then it’s fun to revisit. Mill Creek’s new DVD collects all 65 episodes. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray (Kino Lorber Studio Classics)

SRP: $18.89

Sergio Leone’s landmark Spaghetti Western, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, turned 50 last year, meriting a head-to-toe 4K restoration. This is the best the movie’s looked in almost half a century-not only is the picture clean and crisp, but something’s been done to correct the washed-out, faded look that fans have had no choice but to stomach over the last 30 years of VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray releases. Extra features include two separate cuts of the film-the longer international version, and the shorter one that was shown in U.S. theaters-multiple commentaries, deleted and alternate scenes, image galleries, and documentaries. As for the movie, well, it’s one of the essential Westerns. It made a star out of Clint Eastwood, and is a gosh-darn purdy-lookin’ film to boot. (Read our earlier full review.) Hype! Collector’s Edition Blu-ray (Shout! Factory)

For his classic 1996 documentary, Hype!, Doug Pray and his crew traveled to the Seattle area in 1993 just as the hype train that was grunge rock was about to plummet over a cliff. They spoke not only to many, many bands involved in the local music scene, but to the promoters, photographers, label owners, and publicists who found themselves swept up in the media mania that surrounded grunge in the wake of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. (Nearly everyone spoken to in Hype! seems utterly baffled by the entire phenomenon.) Hype! is not only an essential music documentary, but an incredible study of how a pop culture wave rises and inevitably crashes. Celebrating the film’s 20th anniversary, Shout! Factory’s new Collector’s Edition features a new HD transfer and follow-up interviews with many of the doc’s subjects, including Mudhoney, Jack Endino and Steve Fisk, and others.
