It’s been six years since John Maus last released an album, 2011’s well-received third album, We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves. But on October 27 he is releasing a new album, Screen Memories, via Ribbon Music. And in April 2018 Maus is also releasing a 6-LP vinyl box set that contains another new album, Addendum, also via Ribbon Music. Previously he shared a video for Screen Memories’ first single, “The Combine.” Now here’s another song from the album, “Teenage Witch,” via a video that includes footage Maus shot of himself when he was a teenager. Jennifer Juniper Stratford directed the strange video, which you can watch below, followed by Maus’ upcoming tour dates.

A previous press release explained what Maus had been up to since releasing We Must Become the Pitiless Censors of Ourselves and 2012’s rarities album, A Collection of Rarities and Previously Unreleased Material: “After touring in support of the album, and releasing a collection of rarities and unreleased tracks, Maus receded from the public spotlight, returning to his academic pursuits. Years later, after completing his doctorate in Political Philosophy, he began building his own modular synthesizers, etching the printed circuit boards, soldering components, and assembling panels, until he had an instrument that matched his vision.”

Maus wrote, recorded, and engineered Screen Memories over the last few years in his home in Minnesota, which a press release says is “known genially as the Funny Farm.” The press release describes it as “a solitary place situated in the corn plains of the rural American Midwest,” adding that “the landscape is as majestic as it is austere and inevitably some of the sub-zero winter temperatures creep into the songs, as do the buzzing wasps of summer.”

The box set also features a 56-page booklet that includes lyrics, essays, and never-before-seen photos.
