Grizzly Bear

“Ready, Able” Video

Nov 06, 2009

Watch on YouTube

Director Allison Schulnik‘s clip for Grizzly Bear‘s “Ready, Able” is out now. Its hypnotic, empty sadness reminds you of the band’s shorts for “Knife” or Patrick Daughters’ “Two Weeks.”

There’s a claymation blob melting in the forest and weird crystal spaceship sucking up every rainbow-colored creature in its path. You’ll certainly have more questions than answers after it’s over but that’s part of the fun. In other (less strange) GB news, the Brooklyn quartet recently extended their world tour into the spring of 2010.

Morningbell

Premiere: “Stay In the Garden” MP3

Nov 05, 2009

The Gainesville, Florida psych-jazz quartet known as Morningbell (yes, it’s a Radiohead reference) was formed in 2000 by brothers Travis Atria (vocals, guitar, lyricist) and Eric Atria (bass, theremin, backing vox). Eric’s wife, Stacie Thrushman (keys), joined the group in late 2001, while Chris Hillman (drums) was recruited in 2007 as the band’s sixth skin-hitter.

The group is preparing to release their fourth (and longest) record to date, Sincerely, Severely. African polyrhythm and Brazilian folk music were accentuated on the foursome’s new percussion-centric successor to 2007’s Through the Belly of the Sea. Above, we have an exclusive debut of the smoky, toe-tapping track, “Stay In the Garden.”

The preview cut shows the foursome’s jazzy side with some New Orleans tempos and an upright bass heartbeat. Tom Waits would be proud of Travis’ witty lyrics (“a sky as black as burnt toast”). A sultry tale of a mysterious man pleading someone to “stay in the Garden.” This apparent Eden might as well be a seedy lounge somewhere in the Ninth Circle of Hell though.

Morningbell will be touring the U.S. soon. Make sure to check out their “trademarked 100 Dollar Light Show.” The DIY lighting rig includes a foot-controlled strobe and spotlights. Be sure to check out this intriguing feature on their low budget setup. Sincerely, Severely is being self-released December 1st.

As we reported last week, indie rock stars Spoon have their seventh full-length on the way. Transference is due January 26th in North America through Merge and January 25th in Europe via Anti-.

Track number three, “The Mystery Zone,” hit the internet today and was most likely intentionally leaked by the band. (Notice the clipped end of the track and you’ll see why that theory rings pretty true.)

“The Mystery Zone” is a standard Spoon cut. Thrown-off, ultra-vague verses sound uber cool and marginally catchy over the minimal production but it’s still a step down from previous single “Got Nuffin’” or anything off 2007’s Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Hope the rest of the LP ups these small stakes. (har har!) Frontman Britt Daniel is calling the new album an “uglier record.” We’ll see if that’s good ugly or bad ugly.

Check it out on The Hype Machine (via We All Want Someone to Shout For). (Update: The MP3 has now been taken down.)

Max Tundra

“Which Song (Passion Pit Remix)” MP3

Nov 04, 2009

Max Tundra‘s latest LP, Parallax Error Beheads You, is a chopped-up/glitchy suite of off-kilter pop tracks. It makes sense then to match up his single “Which Song” with the equally hyperactive production of new synthpop kids Passion Pit. The young re-rubbing unit throw in a thicker beat, some ‘80s-synth tomfoolery, and even more falsetto layering. Check it out above. Parallax Error Beheads You is out now on Domino. (via Stereogum)

Saint Etienne

“Spring” (Air France Remix) Video

The new clip from Air France for their Saint Etienne remix is above. Not sure what obscure films they culled these videos from but it syncs up fairly well. Sincerely Yours says: “we asked the boys how they felt about their remix and got this back…” Watch it in higher-res here. The hazy video is bursting with strange footage of police investigations, a parade of masked dancers, and a couple NSFW shots of naked ladies (via GvsB). The St. E’s reissue of Foxbase Alpha is out now, via Heavenly.

Tegan and Sara

“Hell” (Live on Conan) Video

Nov 03, 2009

Watch on YouTube

We already showed you the tug of war video for Tegan and Sara‘s lead single, “Hell.” Now the Quin sisters are testing it out on the road after the release of their sixth LP, Sainthood. Check out their slick, mature performance of the cut from The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien last night.

The Sisters Quin still have that 2010 tour to strut their stuff some more. Take the clip to the very end for a good laugh when Coco towers over the rockin’ siblings.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

“Heaven Can Wait” (Feat. Beck) MP3 Stream

French thespian/singer Charlotte Gainsbourg‘s IRM, was fashioned together with Beck. It’s out in January via Because. We’ve already previewed the LP’s mechanical, beeping title track and its synth-heavy re-rub from diskJokke. Now, you can hear, “Heaven Can Wait,” the lovely duet from the high-power duo. The shambolic single is another nice portent of things to come.

Check out the stream above to peep it, via the Playlist.
