Free Energy

“Dream City” MP3

Jul 17, 2009

Philadelphia quintet Free Energy‘s amazing debut single, “Dream City,” is a ‘70s-style car jam. The grandstanding riffs, handclaps and wordless chorus also evoke a Dazed and Confused-like bender, with the hazy come-down (hangover hopefully not included). Free Energy’s core membersguitarist Scott Wells and singer Paul Sprangers, formerly of similarly retro-minded Minneapolis band Hockey Night—grabbed the ear of DFA Records’ founder Jonathan Galkin. Soon thereafter, the duo shared some studio time with Galkin’s DFA cohort/LCD Soundsystem leader James Murphy to record their tentatively-titled debut longplayer, Stuck on Nothin’, which should drop early 2010. Free Energy is now a fleshed-out quintet and their debut 7-inch is out July 21st on DFA. The Dream City B-side is “Something in Common” and the single is limited to 350 copies.

Not much has been going on in regards to the lounge-y pop group The Kings Of Convenience but that’s soon to change. New ultra sexy single “Mrs. Cold” has started to make the round on the airwaves and on the internet. An MP3 is at inkiostro, and a live version from a show in Seoul is here. (Hear those girls scream.) That entire concert is on YouTube in HD, and it seems like the lads played most of the forthcoming LP. Head here and check the related videos box to dive in. As for when this album will finally be out, the Kings recently sent a postcard to fans on their website. (flip to read!)

Monsters of Folk

“Say Please” MP3

Jul 17, 2009

There’s nothing very folky about “Say Please,” the first track off Monster of Folk’s self-titled debut. In fact, it’s a straight-ahead rocker of the first class variety. The Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James (or more recently Yim Yames), M. Ward and indie mega-producer Mike Mogis release is out September 22nd via Shangri-La in North America, Rough Trade in Europe, Spunk in Australia, and P-Vine in Japan).

Check “Say Please” out here or over on the Monsters of Folk website, where it’s available for streaming or download if you solve an extremely simple puzzle.

After being bumped from Letterman in May (Dave apologizes here), Grizzly Bear finally graced the “Late Show” stage last night. They delivered a stately rendition of Veckatimest‘s “Ready, Able,” with a string section. Love that pizzcato! (via Ed Droste’s Twitter)

Atlas Sound

“Walkabout” MP3

Jul 17, 2009

If the summer already had enough blissed-out soundscapes to bask yourself in, here’s Atlas Sound‘s Bradford Cox (also of Deerhunter) and Animal Collective/Panda Bear cohort Noah Lennox to dump a bucketful of sunshine on our heads. The song is entitled"Walkabout” and it’s from Atlas Sound’s forthcoming LP Logos, due out October 20th on Kranky. (That’s Cox’s very naked/E.T. sighting body to the right, via Fader.) According to Pitchfork, the track surfaced after Cox toured with Animal Collective in Europe. While on the tour bus they played a themed iPod game. During one of the time wasting sessions somebody from AC played “What Am I Going to Do” by The Dovers. Cox became enamored with the organ, drum and electric bass hook and decided to sample it, with the aide of new friend/collaborator. Awww, how cute! Now you can listen to the Brian Wilson-like fruits of their labors here. (via Fader)

Dappled Cities

“The Price” MP3

Jul 16, 2009

Indie-rock Aussie quintet Dappled Cities (formerly Dappled Cities Fly) have a new single on offer through Spinner. The anti-war anthem “The Price” is from the group’s third ablum Zounds, which is being released on Dangerbird Records on September 15. There’s a dirtier sound on this track but than band assures that the rest of the album that turns out to be not much of a game-changer. Zounds is Dappled Cities’ first release after the depature of original member Hugh Boyce, who left the group to pursue a career in bio-mechanical engineering. Most of the new album was recorded in NYC and the fivesome’s homebase of Sydney. Their ‘Walls of Zounds’ tour is currently in full swing, with New South Wales punks The Philadelphia Grand Jury. Delorean

“Seassun” MP3

Jul 16, 2009

Here’s another Balearic house track from Barcelona’s Delorean. The warm and lush “Seasun” is from their new AyrTon Senna EP, which is now available worldwide from the French label Fool House. Before that, it was only out on Mushroom Pillow. “Seasun” sounds just like its title would suggest. The bouncy handclaps and airy vocals evoke the feeling of parasailing over a lagoon. The track’s synths serve as the lapping waves on the shoreline. Also, be sure to check out Delorean’s remixes of The Big Pink‘s “Too Young to Love” and Lemonade‘s “Big Weekend.” Both are streaming at their Myspace.

Wildbirds & Peacedrums

“There Is No Light” MP3

Jul 16, 2009

The second LP from Gothenburg, Sweden’s mesmeric drum and vocals folk couple Wildbirds & Peacedrums, The Snake, comes out August 25. The MP3 (attached here) and self-directed video for standout single “There Is No Light” are both available as previews. “Light” showcases percussionist Andreas Werliin’s driving style and vocalist Mariam Wallentin’s lithe, yet stentorian delivery. Wallentin’s “flashes before your eyes” description of the drumwork in the press sheet seems esepcially apt here. Calling this track ‘tribal’ only grazes the surface. W & P are on tour in Europe this summer.
