From trades (hard- or paperback editions that typically collect five or six issues of an on-going series) to original graphic novels to single monthly issues, the year was rife with magnificent, deep, multi-layered storytelling that offered something to virtually everyone.

Glenn Frey, a singer/songwriter/guitarist and a founding member of 1970s country rock icons Eagles, has died. TMZ reports that the 67-year-old passed due to complications from intestinal issues (he underwent surgery in November to help fix the issue). The band, his family, and management have issued a statement on Frey’s website about his passing:

David Bowie‘s final album, Blackstar (styled as ★), has become the iconic singer’s first album to hit #1 on the Billboard American album charts. He’s had plenty of #1 albums in other countries, such as the United Kingdom (where Blackstar also hit #1), but #1 on the U.S. Billboard album charts have proved elusive until now.

Not long after news of David Bowie‘s death shocked the world last week, Arcade Fire and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band announced a second line parade through New Orleans’ French Quarter to honor the late musician. (Traditionally, a New Orleans funeral involves two lines-the first, a somber march to the cemetery; the second parade is an animated, musical celebration of the deceased’s life.)
