Bar None has announced that it will release a new live album by Big Star‘s late frontman Alex Chilton. Titled Electricity By Candlelight, the LP captures a solo performance by Chilton at The Knitting Factory in New York City in February 1997. As the story goes just as Chilton’s gig was getting started a power failure forced the club to cancel the remainder of the show. After refunds were handed out and the majority of audience left, a select number of hardcore fans stuck around, as did Chilton. Borrowing an acoustic guitar from an audience member, Chilton played in the dark, improvising and singing with what was left of his audience. A superfan by the name of Jeff Vargon managed to record the entire experience using nothing more than a tape deck and a single microphone.
Down below you can listen to a four-song sample of the performance, featuring plenty of banter and covers of Johnny Cash, The Beach Boys, and others. Electricity By Candlelight comes out Oct. 8.
