Emma Anderson, the co-founder of shoegaze icons Lush, released her acclaimed debut solo album, Pearlies, last October via Sonic Cathedral. Now she has shared a new single, “Taste the Air (Julia Holter Mix),” which is a rework of the Pearlies track by Los Angeles musician Julia Holter. Listen below.

It’s the third Pearlies remix/rework Anderson has shared recently, following “Inter Light (MEMORIALS Mix)” in April and “For a Moment (deary Dub Mix)” in May.

Holter released a new album, Something in the Room She Moves, in March via Domino. Read our interview with her about it.

“I love Emma’s voice and the dreamy atmosphere of ‘Taste The Air,’” says Holter in a press release. “It was so fun to counterpoint the mesmerizing vocal layers with rhythmic elements. I was honored to fly through the clouds.”

“This mix is more or less a complete deconstruction,” says Anderson. “It hints at the original track, but the parts are replaced by playful piano and stabs of strings and keys. Most notably there is so much space!

“I was absolutely thrilled when Julia said she would do a mix as I’ve been a fan since her 2015 album Have You In My Wilderness and I was lucky enough to see her live the subsequent year at La Route du Rock in Saint-Malo, France when Lush also played.

“Everyone that’s heard this mix has been completely captivated by it. Hopefully you will be too.”

Previously Anderson shared Pearlies’s first single, “Bend the Round,” via a music video. “Bend the Round” made a special Songs of the Week playlist. Then she shared the album’s second single, “Clusters,” via a music video. “Clusters” was one of our Songs of the Week. Then she shared the album’s third single, “The Presence,” via a lyric video, and it was again one of our Songs of the Week. Pearlies was one of our Top 100 Albums of 2023.

James Chapman (aka Mute Records artist Maps) produced Pearlies, which features some additional guitar contributions from Suede’s Richard Oakes.

In April, Lush and 4AD also teamed up with The Criterion Channel to release A Far From Home Movie, a new short documentary film on the band based on Super-8 footage filmed by bassist Philip King during their tours from 1992 to 1996.
