Modern Woman, the London-based art-rock group led by songwriter Sophie Harris, have released their new single “Johnny’s Dreamworld,” the title track and opening cut from their forthcoming debut album of the same name.
Driven by Juan Brint-Gutiérrez’s serpentine bassline and Adam Blackhurst’s shifting grooves, “Johnny’s Dreamworld” builds a rhythmic backbone for its surreal, immersive atmosphere. Written collectively by the band, the track weaves layered strings with spoken-word passages, conjuring a dreamlike space shaped by fragments of film, memory, and imagination.
Harris explains: “I spend a lot of time in my head, and I like thinking of my mind and other people’s minds like a location sometimes, a dreamworld—I like that reading and particularly music can take you into spaces in those places you haven’t explored before.”
The album marks a significant evolution for the band, expanding from Harris’ early solo songwriting into a fully realized group dynamic. Blending elements of post-punk, avant-garde experimentation, and folk, the record explores the strange poetry hidden within everyday life. Across its nine tracks, Harris’s lyrics draw on literary detail and cinematic imagery, examining the contradictions of womanhood and the darker edges of the ordinary.
Previously the band shared the album’s first single, “Dashboard Mary,” which was one of our Songs of the Week. The album’s second single, “Neptune Girl,” also landed on Songs of the Week. The next single, “Daniel,” was also on Songs of the Week.
