Japanese Breakfast (aka Michelle Zauner) released her sophomore album, Soft Sounds From Another Planet, back in July via Dead Oceans. Previously she shared a video for the album’s first single, “Machinist,” the audio for the lush ballad “Boyish,” and the video for “Road Head.” Now she has released a RPG browser video game entitled Japanese Breakquest. In it you are on a spaceship and need to help put a robot named Machinist back together in order to ward off an impending attack by aliens. Each room in the ship is soundtracked by a different midi version of a song from Soft Sounds From Another Planet. If you beat the game you can download all of the midi versions in full. Play Japanese Breakquest here.
A press release describes the game as such: “Set in space, the goal of the game is to collect pieces of the Machinist robot to help you defeat aliens trying to take over your ship. You can equip band merchandise and instruments, like a (Sandy) Alex G T shirt, or Frankie Cosmos’ Dan Electro to raise your characters’ stats and learn abilities like ‘Philly Indie Cred’ and ‘Rip a Solo’ to conquer your enemies.”
The album is the follow-up to 2016’s well-received debut, Psychopomp. A previous press release said Soft Sounds From Another Planet “is a work of self-reflection that looks out at the cosmos in search of healing, finding inspiration in science fiction, outer space, and the Mars One Project.”
