Canadian indie singer/songwriter Katie Tupper debuted in 2022 with her EP, Towards The End, and followed the next year with a subsequent EP, Where To Find Me. Across those releases, she developed a smoky and sonorous style of indie pop, alternative R&B, and soul, and later this month, she is set to share her debut full-length album, Greyhound. The album blends her aesthete R&B stylings with hints of plaintive folk confessionalism, delicate guitars, and strings, alongside production from her touring partners and collaborators, Justice Der (Rachel Bobbitt, Dylan Sinclair) and Felix Fox (BADBADNOTGOOD).

Tupper explains of the album, “Greyhounds that race on tracks are given these parameters and rabbit decoys to chase that are unreachable. If the front/fastest dog gets close to the decoy, it just speeds up to make them run faster. The dogs think they are chasing something reachable, but by design, it will always be slightly ahead of them. It made me think about my relationships and how I act in the world. I am often both the Greyhound and the decoy — chasing something unreachable and being the thing that cannot be caught.”

In the past year, Tupper has released a steady string of new singles from the album, returning most recently with her November single, “Right Hand Man.” Today, Tupper is sharing her final single from the album, “Safe Ground,” premiering with Under the Radar.

Much of Greyhound plays with contrasts and dualities, and “Safe Ground” is no exception. The track’s production is echoing and expansive, shaded by a steady, distant drumbeat and sighing backing vocals. Yet, Tupper’s vocals and guitar sound close and intimate, smoldering with an understated luster as Tupper and her collaborators fill the track’s negative space with keys and harmonies. Alone, each element is slight and gentle, but together the effect is sweeping. Lyrically, the track offers a tribute to closeness and friendship, with Tupper offering to support a friend no matter what is ahead of them: When the tides are low / I’ll always be your safe shore / I’ve got you in a constant form / Whatever you’re running from / Offer you my promise now / To shelter when the storm’s inbound / Whether you are lost or found / I will be your safe ground.”

Tupper says of the track, “This is my platonic love song. I wrote it to my best friend about how lucky I feel to know her. It is my promise to her to always be a safe spot for her to land.”
