Comedian Marc Maron has one of the most downloaded podcasts around, WTF. Really when I hear the word “podcast” he’s the first person I think of. Maron has been doing it out of his garage since 2009, where he’s interviewed comedy legends past and present, among other notable people (including such musicians as St. Vincent, Conor Oberst, Thom Yorke, and Britt Daniel).

President Obama is arguably one of the hipper commander in chiefs, in terms of his pop culture know-how. He is no stranger to appearing on late night talk shows and even did Zach Galifianakis’ Funny or Die mock interview show Between Two Ferns. He’s also halfway through his second term and has less to lose. So it makes sense that Obama has agreed to appear on WTF.

Tomorrow (Friday) morning he will tape an hour-long interview with Maron in his garage studio in Highland Park in Los Angeles. Despite being a comedian, Maron is known for being a very in-depth and personal interviewer. It’ll be interesting to see what he asks the President. Apparently it was the White House who approached Maron for this and not the other way around.

Maron also plays himself in IFC’s fictionalized comedy show, simply titled Maron, and after this it’ll be a bit harder to believe that he’s a down on his luck podcaster as portrayed on the show. Obviously the goal is for Obama to appeal to a younger audience, but who knows to what end. And of course the first thing Republicans and others anti-Obama will ask is that doesn’t the President have better things to do than appearing on a podcast, especially one named WTF? But presidents both Democrat and Republican have been appearing on late night talk shows for decades now, so how is this any different?

The interview will be posted online on Monday (June 22), so we can all judge for ourselves then whether or not this was worth Obama’s time.

In the meantime, read our 2013 interview with Maron.
