R.E.M. are releasing R.E.M. at the BBC on October 19 via Craft Recordings. It’s an 8-CD and 1-DVD box set that collects rare and unreleased live and studio recordings of the band done by the BBC over the years. Now they have shared a live recording of “E-Bow the Letter,” a song from their 1996 album New Adventures in Hi-Fi. The song was recorded in 2004 at St. James’ Church in London and features Thom Yorke of Radiohead on guest vocals, who filled in for Patti Smith, who sang on the studio version of the song. Listen below.
R.E.M. at the BBC includes studio sessions dating back to 1991, including a 1998 session with John Peel, and live performances dating back to 1984, including their headlining set at Glastonbury in 1999. There’s also a DVD that includes Accelerating Backwards, a 60-minute film that chronicles their BBC performances over the years, as well as a 1998 Later… With Jools Holland special episode devoted fully to R.E.M.
