Watch the First Trailer for Alex Garland’s “Annihilation,” Film Scored by Portishead’s Geoff Barrow
Natalie Portland Sci-Fi Movie from the Director of Ex Machina Due Out February 23, 2018
Sep 27, 2017 Natalie Portman
Ex Machina was one of our favorite films of 2014 and now its writer/director Alex Garland is coming back with a new film, Annihilation. It also has a sci-fi theme to it and is based on Jeff VanderMeer’s 2014 novel of the same name (Garland adapted it into a screenplay and is directing). The film stars Natalie Portman as a biologist searching for her missing husband, played by Oscar Isaac (an Ex Machina alumni, remember his great dance moves in that film?). Geoff Barrow of BEAK> and Portishead is scoring the movie, alongside Ben Salisbury (they did Ex Machina‘s score and also worked on the music for 2012’s Dredd, which Garland wrote, but didn’t direct). Now the first teaser trailer for Annihilation has been shared and it’s a wonder to behold. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on, but the teaser is intriguing to say the least. In Garland we trust.
Annihilation also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Tuva Novotny. It’s due out February 23, 2018 via Paramount. The book is the first of a trilogy, so presumably if Annihilation does well the other two books may be adapted. Garland also wrote 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go (the first two directed by Danny Boyle). He also wrote the book that was the basis for Boyle’s film The Beach.
