Ladytron Share Video/Short Film for “The Animals” Filmed in São Paulo, Brazil

Last month Ladytron released their first new music in seven years, the new song “The Animals.” It was one of our Songs of the Week. Then they also shared a remix of the song by Vince Clarke of Erasure (and formerly of Depeche Mode). Now the band has shared a video for “The Animals.” They are calling it a short film and it was filmed in São Paulo, Brazil. It barely features the band (singer Helen Marnie shows up briefly on a TV screen), instead the Fernando Nogari-directed film centers on the people of São Paulo. Watch it below.
A press release describes “The Animals” video as such: “The short film is a love letter to São Paulo that follows a group of young people on a sensory, violent, and joyous trip through the megalopolis’ underworld, creating a snapshot of Brazil’s dark, contemporary moment where shifting mores regarding culture, gender, spirituality, and identity collide. The film is the result of conversations between the director and Ladytron’s Daniel Hunt, who has lived in São Paulo for the past five years. Its saturated and murky hues and interplay between shadow and light capture the burgeoning city’s tensions and pleasures and reflect the sonic palette of the song which is a combination of primitive synths, emotive harmonies, and lyrics that contemplate humans’ bestial impulses.”
It’s been seven long years since Liverpool-formed electro-pop quartet Ladytron released their last album, 2011’s Gravity the Seducer. Under the Radar go way back with the band, we interviewed them about their debut album, 604, way back in our very first print issue in 2001. Since their last album, singer Helen Marnie released two solo albums and Daniel Hunt co-produced the comeback EP by iconic shoegazers Lush. Ladytron have launched a Pledge Music campaign to raise funds for their next album (check it out here).
Jim Abbiss, who produced Ladytron’s 2005 album Witching Hour, worked with the band on “The Animals.” A press release promises a second single this summer and an album this fall. The Pledge Music campaign offers such rewards as the lyrics to any of their songs handwritten and autographed by a member of the band, vinyl test pressings, a photo book about the history of the band, and more.
Marnie had this to say about the song in a previous press release: “‘The Animals’ was the first new song we had, and with it we went immediately into the studio with Jim Abbiss. He’s the producer who has really understood us the most.”
