Lucy Dacus released a new album, Historian, back in March via Matador. It was our Album of the Week and one of our Top 100 Albums of 2018. Now she has announced a singles series entitled 2019 where she will release seven songs this year, each timed to a different holiday. It’ll be a mix of covers and originals. The first offering is a cover of Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose,” timed to Valentine’s Day. Dacus’ take is a mix of French and English lyrics. Listen to it below via a lyric video, followed by her upcoming tour dates.

The other 2019 songs will be released timed to Mother’s Day (and Taurus season), Independence Day, Springsteen’s Birthday, Halloween, Christmas, and New Year’s. Then they will all be collected at the end of the year in a physical EP.

Dacus had this to say about the project in a press release: “These songs are self-contained, not indicative of a new direction, just a willingness to do something different and sometimes even out of character.”

She had this to say about her “La Vie En Rose” cover: “From the first time I heard it, I thought ‘La Vie En Rose’ was a perfect song. Hearing it, I knew that, one day, I would fall in love. I want someone to listen to this while running at top speed to the doorstep of the person they adore, ready to profess their deep, undying love. (PS, there’s a longer story about singing this song as a duet with my middle school janitor, but it is not concise).”

Dacus also recently teamed up with fellow singer/songwriters Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers to form supergroup Boygenius, whose self-titled debut EP was released in late October via Matador.

Historian was the Richmond, VA-based singer/songwriter’s sophomore album, the follow-up to 2016’s No Burden. No Burden producer Collin Pastore produced the album, which was recorded in Nashville in March 2017. John Congleton mixed the album a few months later.
