27: The Most Perfect Album is an upcoming compilation album in which different artists write songs about the 27 amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Now the contribution by TORRES (aka MacKenzie Scott), “5th Amendment,” has been shared. When someone says they are “pleading the fifth,” it’s in relation to this amendment of the Bill of Rights and not being a witness against themselves in a court case. It also protects against people being charged for the same crime twice (aka double jeopardy). Listen to TORRES’ song below.

Here is the text of the Fifth Amendment: “No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

Previously we shared Kevin Morby’s contribution to the album, “24th Amendment,” as well as Devendra Banharts’ track, simply titled “25th.” 27: The Most Perfect Album is due out September 18 and is being put together by More Perfect, a political podcast from WNYC Studios. The album also features Cherry Glazzer, Palehound, Briana Marela, Sons of an Illustrious Father, Dolly Parton, and more.

More Perfect creator and host Jad Abumrad previously had this to say to Billboard about the album: “The mission of this album is to take these sometimes forgotten words and animate them through the power of music. These 27 amendments not only outline our basic rights as Americans, but they also show a country changing, evolving, re-imagining itself. Striving (and not always succeeding) to be better. These songs will be a way to say that these words matter.”

TORRES released a new album, Three Futures, in September 2017 via 4AD. It was her first album for the iconic label, but in April in a Twitter post Scott announced that 4AD had dropped her for “not being commercially successful enough.” Then in July she shared her first song since being dropped, “Gracious Day.”

Three Futures was her third album and it definitely felt like Scott had stepped up her game in terms of the production and presentation, so it’s too bad it wasn’t met with better success. TORRES shared videos for Three Futures tracks “Skim” (it was our #1 Song of the Week), title track “Three Futures” (it was also our #1 Song of the Week), and “Helen in the Woods” (which was also one of our Songs of the Week).
