Nederland, Colorado’s Yonder Mountain String Band have a new album’s worth of progressive bluebrass called The Show and it’s coming out September 1st on their indie label, Frog Pad. The new release centers on the theme of live stage performance and “Complicated” is the first of several weeks pf planned free MP3 (check back every Thursday for a new one). “Complicated” is no-nonsense string music track with no need for a drummer. As vocalist Dave Johnston sings “There is fire and there’s light / The sense of something coming down this telephone wire.,” the band kicks into the kind of storytelling gear The Mountain Goats often find themselves in.

Just when I thought I was sick of anymore Animal Collective remixes this HATCHMATIK Disco Bootleg retooling from the folks at Uh Oh Disco! skittered across my desk from a college friend. The electro disco cut was part of the site’s Reader’s Choice vote back in March. Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion is out now on Domino. URB recently featured HATCHMATIK as one of their NEXT100 artists.

Here’s a filthy, incredibly lo-fi punk track titled “Flowers” from Mississippi’s Flight. It’s taken from a recent 7-inch on Sweet Rot Records. Mosey on over to the band’s MySpace to hear another track while you wait for their forthcoming ten-inch on Kill Shaman this fall.

“Lewis Takes Off His Shirt” (New Song at Hillside Festival) Video
Even through a gathering lightning storm, Owen Pallett throws down a Herculean performance of a new Final Fantasy song, “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt.” It’ll probably appear on the oft-postponed (and highly anticipated) Heartland. (Sadly, there’s no firm release date yet.) Pallett played through the pounding squall as concerned stage hands audibly advised him to yank the plug and tarp his equipment. Pallett calmy responded with “just let me finish this song” (later updating them with a curt, “just one more minute”). The drenched crowd went nuts during the tremolando finale. The high quality footage was shot by Graeme Phillips, Mark Sloggett and Jeff Mew. It was filmed at the Hillside Festival in Guelph, Ontario right before a rain delay. (Via Stereogum)
The Matablog has John McSwain’s video for Yo La Tengo‘s “Here to Fall,” the psychedelic soul burner that opens Popular Songs, the Hoboken trio’s forthcoming album. It’s the first in a series of five videos McSwain directed for tracks from Popular Songs.
The “Here to Fall” video consists almost entirely of footage of skywriters doodling itricate patterns on the big blue palette above our heads. If you’ve got a fear of heights, it’s sort of harrowing.
Here’s Skybaby’s official premiere of Super Furry Animals video for “Mt.” The pitch-dark performance clip plays tricks on your eyes as each Furry Animal enjoys a muted spotlight on the Dark Days/Light Years cut. Not exactly as colorfulaspreviousvisualoutings but nice nonetheless.

According to a news post from leader John Darnielle, the new Mountain Goats LP is titled The Life of the World to Come and it’s dropping on our doorsteps October 6th on the oh-so-dreamy 4AD. For more information on the group’s seventeenth release(!) check out our news article on the Biblical album. Here you can find “Genesis 3:23.” It’s just one of many tracks named after Bible verses. It seems The Goats have forever ditched their lo-fi sound for the type of full-band studio sheen heard on Get Lonely and Heretic Pride. Darnielle’s witty turns of phrase are still working overtime though. The main melody also harkens back to live staple “This Year.” The head Goat clicks off phrases about picking a lock at his old stomping grounds in Clear Lake, California and sitting up late looking at stars that resemble “teeth in the mouth of a shark.” Casual B&E has never sounded so pleasant.
