Julia Holter

Watch: Julia Holter “Words I Heard” Video

Oct 16, 2018

Julia Holter has shared a new song and video, “Words I Heard” from her forthcoming album Aviary, out October 26th on Domino. Aviary is the fifth album from the L.A. singer-composer-producer. If “Words I Heard” is any indication, it will be another adventurous and genreless work.

The video is directed by frequent collaborator Dicky Bahto…”On Aviary, Julia took a quote from Lebanese-American writer Etel Adnan as its starting point and Bahto takes this inspiration further for ‘Words I Heard”

“Tall trees of so many kinds, from redwoods to manzanitas, oaks, madrones, maples and elms, plants and bushes, flowers and seeds, acorns and grass, they all are the last chance of the earth and they all make a thick and permanent coat, a cover, a bath of perfume, a touch of healing, a royal procession, music and fanfare, they rise and talk to Tamalpais, and sing lullabies and songs of love.” Etel Adnan, ‘Journey to Mount Tamalpais’

Bahto says of the video: “When Julia told me that the title of her album was inspired by Etel Adnan, one of my favorite writers, I felt that I had to make a film for one of the songs on Mount Tamalpais, a recurring subject in both Adnan’s visual art and her writing. I filmed on a few hikes down the Dipsea trail, and in the last section of the song combine this with footage made during the studio sessions of the album.”

“Feel First Life” is one of the quiet and emotive piano tracks on Jon Hopkins’ brilliant album Singularity, released back in May. It’s reminiscent of Nils Frahm, a friend, and influence of Hopkins. The video, directed by Elliott Dear, was an Apple Music exclusive until today. Check out stop-action video to the gently, profoundly stirring song below.

“I never made an album under that name I was embarrassed by, and this is one of my favorites, so I may as well get out while I still can, on a personal high note to boot,” said Krug in a press release. “Take this album as a sort of parting gift before Moonface sails into oblivion; the alter-ego’s final offering.”

Bring it.

Jeff Tweedy is releasing a solo album WARM, coming November 30th on dBpm Records. Uh..that’s cool. Today he shared the video for lead single “Some Birds”, directed by Seth Henrikson. Check it out below.

From the press release:

“When I got the call to collaborate with Jeff on the video for ‘Some Birds’ it was a thrill and an honor,” comments Henrikson. “The concept for the video naturally highlights Jeff’s amazing song writing and lyrical genius. However, it also exploits another of Jeff’s gifts—his uncanny sense of men’s fashion and hairstyles. I’m excited to share it with Tweedy fans!”
Jeff describes the song as “like a lot of songs on WARM, being a confrontation between self and shadow self simultaneously feeling I’m to blame and not to blame, present and gone, and utterly confused, but determined to hold someone accountable.

WARM was produced and recorded entirely by Jeff at Chicago’s now legendary studio, The Loft(with help from some of his usual collaborators – Spencer Tweedy, Glenn Kotche and Tom Schick). WARM follows the acoustic retrospective release, Together at Last (2017), and Wilco’s 2016 album, Schmilco.

Jon Hopkins

Watch: Jon Hopkins “Sigularity” Video

Sep 19, 2018

British composer-producer Jon Hopkins has delivered one of this year’s most striking albums in Singularity. There have been a couple wonderful videos released for the tracks “Emerald Rush”, and an Apple Music exclusive for “Feel First Life”, and today Hopkins shared the video for the title track “Singularity”. He calls it “The single most epic video I’ve ever had made.” and talks about the video’s director Seb Edwards:

Seb has been a friend and collaborator for nearly 15 years now, but this is the first opportunity we’ve had to work with total freedom on a video for my own music. The power of what he has done left me speechless the first time I saw it. He translated the themes of destruction and defiance that I fed into the music into a powerful, violent ballet between male and female and I totally love it.”

Says Edwards of the project: I’ve always loved Jon’s work and we’ve been wanting to collaborate for a while. ‘Singularity’ is such an incredible track, its merciless intensity somehow reflects our troubled times. I wanted to capture the feeling of defiance that rises from the initial brutality. The track is ultimately about acceptance and finding peace in nature. I hope I did it justice.”
