Richard Reed Parry

Premiere: Richard Reed Parry “I Was In The World (Was The World In Me)” Live Video

Sep 18, 2018

Arcade Fire’s multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry is set to release his sophomore album Quiet River of Dust Vol.1 this Friday the 21st on ANTI- Records. Ahead of the release, Under the Radar has the premiere of the live video for “I Was In The World (Was The World In Me)”.

I Was in the World, Was the World in Me is a song about the elements and our bodies being inextricably interwoven - about being a human and experiencing a moment in nature that’s so direct and powerful that we lose our sense of where we end and the world around us begins,” describes Parry poetically. “A simultaneously blissful and terrifying moment of “losing yourself”: swimming in a river, realizing that the same beautiful tactile sensation you’re having in the water is, in a way, a living version of what you might experience at the moment of death - the molecules of your body actually merging with the molecules of the world around you…we become ashes, thrown into the sea, absorbed up into the clouds, raining down onto the land and into the rivers… as we turn, turn, turn again.”

The seven-song psychedelic folk-rock album is the first of two volumes to be released in accordance with a seasonal equinox; Vol.1 arriving on the autumnal equinox this Friday, September 21st, and the second volume to be released on the date of the spring equinox in 2019. The new work was Inspired by the traditional British folk music Parry was raised with as well as a formative experience exploring Japanese forests after Arcade Fire’s first tour there in 2008.

“Being out in the natural world or being immersed in music is the meditation for me,” says Parry of the work. “That’s the heart of this record: the experience of transcending the place that you’re in, getting lost in the feeling of where you end and where the world begins, in a dreamlike world of music and thought.” It is music meant to be absorbed in a setting devoid of other distractions, not shuffled into your streaming playlist—a tall demand these days but one worth the time.

The album has been “slowly gestating for the last decade, in many ways a necessary respite from Parry’s other gigs.” according to the press release. “Japanese folk myths, death poems, and British folk music are tributaries flowing into a river of late-20th-century avant-garde composition and traditional songcraft…This is a meditative, widescreen musical experience with Beach Boy harmonies and a hypnotic pulse. Layered songs that move in a linear fashion, following a current rather than circular composition.”

Quiet River of Dust Vol.1&2 is Parry’s independent turn into psychedelic folk-rock after his 2014 album of biologically inspired compositions, Music for Heart and Breath and three albums leading the instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre, which he formed in university as a student of electroacoustic music and contemporary dance. Parry will tour the record on a small fall run starting in October. Dates Below.

Molly Burch

Watch: Molly Burch “To The Boys” Video

Sep 17, 2018

Molly Burch’s welcome sophomore album, First Flower, is out October 5th, 2018 and today she shared the amusing barnyard toy video for her floating track “To The Boys”.

Burch says of the song, “I‘ve been called soft-spoken a lot in my life and I feel like I’ve carried that around with me. It seems like a lot of us have internalized this image of what a “powerful” person looks and sounds like, what a leader looks and sounds like. Hopefully that’s changing. This song is about finding your power and holding it with confidence, and not apologizing for being yourself.”

From the press release: First Flower is the follow up to Burch’s acclaimed debut Please Be Mine. It is a walk-through Molly’s most intimate thoughts, exploring broken friendships, her relationship to her sister and how she learned to fight overwhelming anxiety. Throughout, her voice is as strong and dexterous as ever, displaying her incredible range and professionalism as a vocalist.

While hurricane Harvey kept Molly locked in at home, she wrote much of the album, bouncing ideas off her bandmate and boyfriend Dailey Toliver who would contribute guitar parts and orchestration suggestions. When it came time to record, Burch chose to work with Erik Wofford at Cacophony Recorders in Austin.
Burch has announced a headlining US tour this Fall which will run through to December in support of the new album. Check below for the dates.

Tokyo Police Club

Watch: Tokyo Police Club “Simple Dude” Video

Sep 06, 2018

Hey, Tokyo Police Club are back with a new song and video “Simple Dude”. A meaty guitar riff opens up the new single from the Ontario quartet’s new album TPC, out October 5th on Dine Alone Records. The video was created using film negatives shot by bassist/vocalist Dave Monks during the recording of the new album, in Los Angeles this winter – scratching lyrics and imagery directly into the film negatives, animated by videographer Anne Douris.

Discussing the single, drummer Greg Alsop stated: “To me – Simple Dude is a roller coaster… the slow climb of the verse - the drop of the chorus… that lift in the pit of your gut as you pull back up into the second verse and that feeling of just soaring right as the cart slows down towards the end. That’s what I felt the first time we played through it and that’s what I still feel every time we play it.”

TPC is the first album in four years from Tokyo Police Club and almost never got made due to serious consideration of calling it quits. But they thought better of it and pushed through despite geographical separation. The band will celebrate with a special North American tour of underplays, kicking off October 16 in New York.

Mogwai

Listen: Mogwai “Funeral Pyre” from the KIN Soundtrack

Sep 02, 2018

Just a quintessential example of my longstanding stance that Mogwai would make the perfect scoring music. Gorgeously understated, slow release. From Mogwai’s soundtrack to the just released Sci-fi film KIN.

Iceage

Watch: Iceage – KEXP In-Studio

Aug 31, 2018

Definitely one of the hype bands of the year, Iceage stopped through KEXP earlier this summer for a four song session consisting of “Catch It”, “Painkiller”, “Hurrah” and “Beyondless”. The performance was just posted. Cheryl Waters hosts and you never quite know how frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt will approach a question.

The Twilight Sad

Watch: The Twilight Sad “I/m Not Here [missing face]” Video

Aug 29, 2018

Exultantly, The Twilight Sad are making their return. Today they shared the video for “I/m Not Here [missing face]”. The very promising track marked a new album ahead under new label Rock Action:

“The band’s recent signing to Rock Action – a home for so much rich, deserving music, particularly in the band’s native Scotland – feels like something of a homecoming for The Twilight Sad. Speaking of the union, lead singer James Graham says, “To be able to say that we’re on that record label, to try and give something back for all the good faith they’ve had in us over the years. Mogwai took us on tour early on, introduced us to Robert [Smith]. They’ve been a through line for us and I’m excited to be a part of that label.”

The video is comprised of VHS camcorder footage and “runs a fine line between wistful, homespun melancholia and a more intense, at times sinister, sense of reflection - gradually becoming more warped as if to mirror the way our memory can become self-manipulated and refracted with time and distance.”

Speaking of the video, its creator Brendan Jay Smith says, “When Andy and I came across the footage, we both immediately felt that it was the right fit for “I/m Not Here [hidden face].” I was really interested in the idea that our memories are often confused and influenced by what we recall from old camcorder footage. Sometimes it’s difficult to work out how you feel about an experience and other times it’s etched in a recurring visual that degrades over time.”

Mac DeMarco

Listen: Mac DeMarco covers “Honey Moon” by Japanese Artist Haruomi Hosono

Aug 24, 2018

In the midst of writing and recording new original material Mac DeMarco always has time for a cover. This one is of “Honey Moon” by Japanese artist Haruomi Hosono. He takes Hosono’s avant-abstraction and pulls it closer to South American folk-pop… I suppose. Hear for yourself.
