Legendary ‘90s shoegazers Slowdive are releasing a new album, a self-titled affair and their first full-length in 22 years, this Friday (May 5) via Dead Oceans. Previously they had shared “Star Roving” and the video for “Sugar For the Pill.” Now the band has shared a remix of “Sugar For the Pill” by Avalon Emerson, a DJ/producer originally from San Francisco. She expands the song to make it twice as long, as well as more electronic in nature. The official title for the remix is “Sugar For the Pill (Avalon Emerson Gilded Escalation).” Listen below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates, including a U.S. tour that starts tonight.
Slowdive’s last album was 1995’s Pygmalion. Slowdive broke up that year, although some of the members went on to form Mojave 3. The band reformed in 2014 and began playing shows again. The band’s full line-up is back: Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Christian Savill (guitar), Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals), and Simon Scott (drums, electronics).
Slowdive was recorded at The Courtyard in Oxfordhsire and mixed at Los Angeles’ Sunset Sound by Chris Coady (Beach House). Halstead had this to say about the album in a previous press release: “When you’re in a band and you do three records, there’s a continuous flow and a development. For us, that flow re-started with us playing live again and that has continued into the record.”
We interviewed Slowdive’s Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell in 2014 about the reunion and posted various articles on the band. Read our print magazine article on Slowdive’s reunion.
