Another Dark Year Was Brightened By a Plethora of Fantastic Albums

Dec 30, 2017

2016 was regarded as a fairly rough year by many, but 2017 was no walk in the park either. 2016 was mired by the deaths of several beloved musical icons (David Bowie, Prince, Leonard Cohen, George Michael, and Sharon Jones among them) and the disappointing and divisive Presidential election, but in 2017 we had to deal with the ramifications of said election (we’d say that roughly 95% of the musicians we interview likely don’t support many, if any, of President Trump’s policies). Our Favorite Albums Released Between January 1 and July 7, 2017

Jul 13, 2017

In the past we’ve avoided posting midyear best albums lists. It seemed somehow impatient and premature to evaluate the year’s albums halfway through. And how do you decide which period the list covers, which arbitrary release date do you work out is the cut off point, as every midyear list seems to cover a different period? But 2017 is a year that demands a partial evaluation. More

Interviews

Feb 09, 2024

Since reforming in 2013, Slowdive has now been around longer than their initial run in the early ’90s. The music industry they now inhabit has morphed into something that would have been completely unrecognizable to their younger selves. But Slowdive’s guitarist, singer (alongside Rachel Goswell), and primary lyricist, Neil Halstead, has never been the type of musician to dwell on the past. More

My Favorite Album: Rachel Goswell of Slowdive on Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”

“This is an album I will listen to time and time again and just sit there singing it. Obviously not as well as [Joni Mitchell] does!”

Mar 18, 2020

I think it’s actually quite impossible to choose one favorite album. I could definitely do a list of 10 but to do one is really hard. It would have been a toss-up between Joni Mitchell’s Blue and After the Goldrush by Neil Young. More

The Soft Cavalry is the brainchild of husband and wife duo Steve Clarke and Rachel Goswell. The latter perhaps better known for her work with Slowdive, Mojave 3, and Minor Victories while the former has played bass and sang backing vocals in a number of bands (including Ricky Gervais/David Brent’s Foregone Conclusion) as both a full time member and session musician. Ariel Pink vs. Slowdive

Moving Sideways: A Conversation Between Ariel Pink and Neil Halstead

Sep 15, 2017

A conversation between Ariel Pink (full name Ariel Marcus Rosenberg) and Neil Halstead, vocalist/guitarist of Slowdive, is seemingly incongruous at first blush, considering their vastly different methodologies. Ariel Pink has released music at a rapid pace, in a cut-up manner, evolving from his early 4-track days onto newer adventures in hi-fi such as 2014’s terrific Pom pom. More

May 05, 2017

“What? An interview? Who is it? An American?” Hearing that in the background of a scheduled phone interview at roughly 10 p.m. U.K. time normally portends doom for the interviewer, but in this case Rachel Goswell of reunited shoegaze icons Slowdive assuaged my fears quickly. More

Distant Battle Cries

Jul 12, 2016

Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell says the word ‘supergroup’ “sits very uncomfortably with her.” She’s talking about her new project Minor Victories, which, as the term implies, also includes members of other noted bandsEditors’ Justin Lockey, his brother James, and Mogwai’s Stuart Braithwaite. More

Aug 12, 2014

While Slowdive‘s early singles rode in on waves of distortion that saw the band lumped in with the rest of the shoegaze pack, by the time they released their 1991 debut album, Just For A Day, they had delved into a more ambient territory that set them apart from their peers. We asked founding members Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswellwho share guitar and vocal duties in the recently reformed bandto tell us about the artists and albums that helped shape Slowdive’s sound. While they acknowledged the influence that classic rock groups such as The Velvet Underground, Pink Floyd, and The Byrds had on their music, the bands that most heavily informed their sound were practically their contemporaries.
