RIP Robin Gibb
Bee Gees Singer Dead at 62
Robin Gibb, member of the influential disco group The Bee Gees has passed away at the age of 62 after a long battle with cancer.
Born on the British Isle of Man, Gibb began his musical aspirations at a young age singing harmony with his older brother Barry and his twin brother Maurice. When the Gibb family moved to Australia the three brothers formed The Bee Gees and released their first album in 1965, landing a few minor hits with such British Invasion type songs such as “New York Mining Disaster 1941,” “I Started a Joke,” and others.
After breaking up in 1969 and eventually reforming in 1971 the brothers found their true niche in the rising genre of disco, scoring their first true hit with the 1975 single “Jive Talkin’.” In 1977 the band provided five new songs for the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever. Featuring three number one singles (“Staying Alive,” “Night Fever,” and “How Deep Is Your Love”) the record became one of the best-selling albums of all time, topping the charts for 24 straight weeks.
To this day The Bee Gees have sold over 220 million records, making them one of the best-selling musical groups of all-time. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Gibb is survived by his brother Barry (youngest brother Andy died in 1988, with Maurice passing away in 2003).
