In 1984, The Toxic Avenger rose from the radioactive ooze of low-budget filmmaking and into cult legend. Now, more than 40 years later, filmmaker Macon Blair is breathing new life into Tromaville’s most grotesque superhero. The reboot, starring Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, and Taylour Paige, hits theaters on August 29, and Blair couldn’t be more thrilled about the strange full-circle moment of it all.

Blair, whose directorial debut of I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore won Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize, never thought he’d one day helm a Toxic Avenger remake. “When I was, I want to say sixth or seventh grade, around there, I saw the original Toxic,” Blair says. “My buddy’s brother had it on videotape, and we watched it. And it was one of those things where it made a huge impact on us at that time. We were making our own movies. It kind of inspired that to a certain extent.”

The ability to return to such nostalgic material and make it his own was a personal passion project, allowing him to craft the type of movie he’d always wanted to: one where sophomoric humor and outrageous gore could coexist.

“It occurred to me that it could be a really fun opportunity to do a type of movie that I had been trying to do in other spaces,” he says. “Something that’s sort of based around a monster or a creature of some kind… deliberately silly, sophomoric, with some blood and gore. I had never really been able to get any of those other movies made, because they weren’t based on anything. And this seemed like an opportunity, like, ‘Oh, that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do.’”

From the beginning, Blair’s pitch leaned hard into comedy. “I told them, ‘If you guys want to talk to me about this, then what I’m interested in is the silliness, the sweetness, having the blood and guts be deployed in a cartoonish Itchy and Scratchy-fun kind of way. Basically, have the movie be a comedy. More than an action movie, more than a superhero movie, more than a vigilante movie, just treat it like a comedy, Blair says.

To Blair’s relief, the studio was fully on board, and that spirit of unrestrained creativity even extended to Blair pitching gags like an intestine-pulling sight joke in the middle of the night to top executives—and getting a green light within hours. “If there were constraints, we never got to them,” Blair says with a laugh.

Of course, the road to release wasn’t smooth. Production began in Bulgaria in 2021 after pandemic delays and endured more hurdles, including the Writers Guild strike and lengthy post-production. The film premiered in 2023 at Fantastic Fest and Beyond Fest, where the reception was raucous, complete with a toxic slime-chugging contest at one screening. Still, distribution took time to finalize.

“It was a little bit of an anxious time because I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Blair says. “This was certainly the biggest thing I’d ever been associated with by far, and so I didn’t want it to collapse and have that be a thing.”

Cineverse eventually stepped in with a plan for a theatrical release, something Blair had deeply hoped for. “I felt like this was the type of movie that if people liked it, the best version of it would be in a rowdy theater with a bunch of people having a good time late at night, throwing popcorn around and having a good time,” he says.

“The whole point of it is to make something that the fans of the original feel like it’s a continuation of the thing that they loved in the first place,” Blair says. “In other words, it’s not like somebody grabbed something that was precious to them and totally made a left turn and ran off and made something that’s like not recognizable. If you’re going to call it The Toxic Avenger, then I think it wants to have the silliness and the kind of lovably trashy quality to it that people keep coming back to.”
