For our recurring Self-Portrait feature we ask a musician to take a self-portrait photo (or paint/draw a self-portrait) and write a list of personal things about themselves, things that their fans might not already know about them. This Self-Portrait is by Peter Cattermoul of Teleman.
Cattermoul plays bass in the British quartet, which also features singer/guitarist Thomas Sanders, keyboardist/synth player Jonny Sanders (Thomas’ brother), and drummer Hiro Amamiya. They released their third album, Family of Aliens, back in September via Moshi Moshi. It is the follow-up to 2016’s Brilliant Sanity and 2013’s Bernard Butler-produced Breakfast.
Thomas Sanders had this to say about Family of Aliens in a press release announcing the album: “We want to keep evolving and keep discovering. This band is one long journey for us, and we never want to stop developing and finding new ways of creating music. I’m always wanting to better what we’ve done before. To go deeper, to find something more beautiful, more catchy, more challenging, more interesting…just more.”
Read on as Cattermoul writes about his origins and some iconic musicians he’s met over the years.
1. I used to play in Pete and the Pirates.
2. I grew up in Reading but have lived in London for the last 10 years. I lived in Peckham before it was fashionable.
3. I studied Music at Sussex University. I didn’t study very hard as I spent most of my time smoking marijuana and recording indie music on my 8-track.
4. I was born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1982. I met the band Parliament at Camp Bestival and they were very excited when I said I was from their hometown. Since then I’ve felt much more legitimacy in my funky feelings.
5. My first job was age 14 washing up in an Indian Takeaway on Friday and Saturday nights for £3/hour. I bought a guitar pedal, which I still have today.
6. I met Prince at a private gig at the Hippodrome Casino. I was wasted at the time. Afterwards I won over £2000 on roulette by playing all on black. I haven’t gambled since. I bought guitar pedals with the money.
7. I champion veganism online but I actually eat meat.
8. I wrote a string quartet for the Ligeti Quartet which I still need to get recorded.
