The End: deary

On a Sunday

Apr 17, 2026 Web Exclusive Photography by Josh Hight

To conclude the week, we ask Rebecca “Dottie” Cockram of deary some questions about endings and death.

The London dream-pop/shoegaze trio just released their debut album, Birding, via Bella Union. Cockram plays guitar and sings lead vocals and the band also features Ben Easton (guitar) and Harry Catchpole (drums). Deary released their debut single back in 2023, so Birding has been several years in the making.

Birding is a collection of tracks that deal with human consequence,” explains Cockram. “The main goal was to create songs with more emotion and intent, increasing the height of the ceilings and the width of the walls. We allowed ourselves to be direct when we wanted to and also challenge ourselves with more abstract and experimental moments. It was an incredible experience making it, and we’re excited to get back out on the road and play a few tunes live.”

Read on as Cockram discusses her favorite endings (to movies, TV shows, and albums), grandma’s cooking, and the animal she once dreamt of being.

How would you like to die and what age would you like to be?

At the end of a great summer, in my sleep. Maybe 70? An age ending in an 0 or a 5.

What song would you like to be playing at your deathbed?

“Kathy’s Song” by Simon & Garfunkel. My friend showed me this recently. I think S&G make the most gentle and nostalgic songs. I want that guitar to be the last thing I hear.

What song would you like to be performed at your funeral and who would you like to sing it?

I would like everyone to sing “Change” by Big Thief. It’s a beautiful song about how the world changes around us and we cannot control it.

What’s your favorite ending to a movie?

The ending to Se7en is fantastic. I only watched it at the end of last year and I think the writing is very clever. I read somewhere that David Fincher used a hand held camera to film Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman towards the end to show them losing control as the shots were shaky and loose. Whereas Kevin Spacey was filmed with a tripod, still and in control.

What’s your favorite series finale last ever episode of a TV show?

It’s not a series finale as there is a second season but the end of series one of Flowers makes me cry every time. It’s such a beautiful, weird, and sad TV show where every character experiences loss in some way. The main plot discusses a father of the Flowers family who is a depressed children’s book author. There are moments throughout the series where the episode is commentated by one of the characters from his books Mr Grubbs (him being Mr Grubbs). This episode ends with a poem about him realizing that he actually wants his heart to keep beating. It’s my favorite TV show of all time and I really recommend it.

What’s your favorite last song on an album?

“Days of Candy” from Depression Cherry by Beach House. Any song on this album is perfect but I love the choir at the beginning of this song. It feels like a farewell.

If you were on death row, what would you like your last meal to be?

Sunday roast cooked by my grandma. She makes the best roast potatoes.

If reincarnation exists, who or what would you like to be reincarnated as?

A squirrel. I had a dream when I was younger that I was really tiny and running around the woodland near where I live. I think I was a squirrel.

What role or achievement would you most like to be remembered for?

I’d like to be known for being supportive. To always be that person that says, “Yes you can do that. You can achieve that.”

What would you like your last words to be?

I really have no idea. I’d like them just to be honest. Or maybe no last line at all? What if I say something silly and then I’m remembered by that? Maybe just a nod to say “see you soon.”
