...And the Horse You Rode In On, The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir’s new album (their second for Bloodshot), is full of literate, darkly hilarious surprises. From the truly brilliant first line “I hope that you catch syphilis and die alone” to the closing track’s “Now when I catch wind of your successes/I wish I were dead,” the recordings are peppered with sharp, bitter little barbs that will hook listeners and help anyone put their past failed relationships into perspective. Along the way “One Night Stand,” “Something’s Happening,” and “I Pretend She’s You” are all worth the download. Another great one, “Sixteen is Too Young,” has a strong set of lead vocals by Mary Ralph and investigates a similar tone and sentiment to Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl.” It’s an excellent choice for fans of Morrissey, Jarvis Cocker, Art Brut, and The Hold Steady.
