Elementary is a modern-day reinterpretation of the Sherlock Holmes stories, featuring Lucy Liu and Jonny Lee Miller both playing tightly-wound characters who are not so into sharing. It’s hard to fancy spending an hour staring at a poker face-even a beautiful one.

Submarines are cool. Last Resort knows this fact. A super nuclear sub, the USS Colorado, is the setting for this Navy show. The Colorado’s crew disobeys questionable orders to fire on a foreign country and is declared rogue.

Ocean Roar is the second in a two-part release from Phil Elverum this year, the companion to Clear Moon. As the titles imply, that installment was a bit more delicate. It offered a cozy warmth around the hearth, away from the northwesterly natural onslaught Elverum always paints so perfectly.

The Neighbors is an aliens-among-us show along the lines of My Favorite Martian, Mork and Mindy, or Third Rock From the Sun. Stereotypical-looking aliens, i.e. green sea monkey-looking things, come to Earth in an actual flying saucer to check it out as a possible place to live for their kind as something’s going wrong with their planet.

Guys with Kids plays like the dad half of the movie What to Expect When You’re Expecting. Creator Jimmy Fallon focuses on three fathers, one of them divorced, the other two still married.

Toy’s name, implying a certain level of childhood fancy, is appropriate. The band’s music does conjure up images of pubescent teens jamming out in their bedrooms, first instruments in hand.

The Mindy Project is a realistic and natural single girl show without trying too hard. Writer/producer/best-selling author Mindy Kaling (The Office) co-created the show with Howard Klein (Parks and Recreation) and wrote the pilot.

Dennis Quaid’s new drama could have just as easily been titled CSI: Las Vegas 1960. It’s a standard-as-they-come police procedural jammed into what feels like a cheap period-piece overcoat.

This brother-sister combination is your biggest dream and worst nightmare. Both Kate and Ben are a disaster, but in completely different ways. Kate (Dakota Johnson) is an ahead-of-time mom who is too much in her own head, to quote her, managing a bar and trying to raise her awesome daughter Maddie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones).
