Though he spent only a few years as a New York City firefighter, the experience became deeply ingrained in actor Steve Buscemi. In director Liz Garbus’ hour-long documentary, Buscemi returns to his old firehouse, Engine 55, reconnects with old friends, and interviews a handful of current and retired firefighters about their experiences within the FDNY.

Buscemi and Garbus deftly avoid overly saccharine patriotism, especially when dealing with 9/11—an unavoidable topic in a documentary about the FDNY. They treat their subjects with deserved veneration, without laying it on too thick. The result is a surprisingly fascinating and moving account of life on the job, which one subject equates with “being a soldier at war.” A focus on hardships faced by female and minority firefighters is particularly interesting. The film is undeniably a partial New York history, but it will likely resonate with anyone—firefighter, New Yorker, or neither.
