A Moment in My Eyes

My Precious Bunny is part solo album, part collective and the brainchild of Lily Wolter from Penelope Isles. The keen-eared of you will remember how devastatingly catchy Penelope Isles can be and A Moment in My Eyes is business as usual.

“Joys of Adulthood” is the standout track—a slow moving meander through the transition from kidhood to adulthood. The lyrics are filled with existential pathos. When Wolter sings “What a little drama queen” with all the fuzz and the tapping melody after is the highlight, not only of the song, but on the album. The piano playing is a stark copy of the vocal. Laughing samples. It all adds to a delightfully complex song that should be dissected, and studied, so future songwriters understand how great songwriting is achieved. The title track starts off with a beautiful, melancholy string section. A gentle, picked, acoustic guitar kicks in, joined by Wolter’s delicate vocals and disjointed horns. “Black and white photos, spillings of a dream / Tents up in the garden, youngest of the team” is such a simple lyric but the imagery is so powerful and emotive. When I hear it, I’m reminded of playing camping in gardens with friends in junior school and of a picture of my dad doing the same in my gran’s garden when he was seven. And this is what A Moment in My Eyes is made of—countless moments when you are taken away with the music to a place you have totally forgotten about, but always staying with the music.

At its heart, A Moment in My Eyes is an exquisite album. The melodies ooze from the speakers. Wolter’s vocals are delicate and sincere. Take a track like “Wack.” It’s as slow moving as a defender that has just been nutmeg. The guitars gently chug. The keyboards/synths are woozy. The collective choir of friends and well wishers perfectly underpins Wolter’s voice. Everything builds and swells until it reaches a peak that would make Pavement happy. This is slacker indie at its best. As with Penelope Isles, it’s the lyrics that are the main event. The songs are about love, loss, and redemption, all with an existential vein running through them. These are the songs to remember when you are on top of the world as they’ll spur you on to aim for greater heights, but to cling onto in your darkest moments. They’ll show you that things aren’t that bad and will get better. (www.mypreciousbunny.bandcamp.com/album/a-moment-in-my-eyes)
