Long Beach foursome Avi Buffalo played a 30-minute live in-store at stalwart local indie shop Fingerprints on Monday night, the eve of the release of the band’s debut record. Friends, family, and fans gathered to see the band perform seven of the 10 songs from its eponymous Sub-Pop LP. Frontman Avi Zahner-Isenberg’s assured lead guitar skills were on display throughout the set. His songs have an inviting pop sensibility that dissuades indulgence and allows bandmates Rebecca Coleman (keys), Arin Fazio (bass) and Sheridan Riley (drums) to flourish simultaneously without stepping on each other. David Dillon, a guest player on Avi Buffalo, joined the band on saxophone for opener “Coaxed,” and the highlight was set-closer “Remember Last Time,” with the band kicking it up a notch for the song’s instrumental climax.

Fazio had an embarrassing stage moment when he instructed those in attendance to “buy records from Amoe—.” The crowd teasingly jeered him before he could recant his words. “Or I mean, sorry, not from Amoeba,” he said. “Crucify me later!” After the set, the band sat down to sign cds and limited-print posters, a Fingerprints tradition. Avi Buffalo caps a week of California in-stores with a headlining show at the Troubadour on Saturday, before heading to Europe in May.

Does Long Beach have a beach or is it just the name of the city?

Just read a print review of their performance and I’d say they were awesome! There was so much rave, I think I’m gonna get an album myself!
