Awkward EP
Fat Possum
Dec 05, 2012 Web Exclusive
These four young musicians from Fremantle, Australia, found some radio airplay and chart success on their native continent with “Awkward,” a burst of bubbly pop that’s difficult to not love. This track alone—the focal point of their first domestic release—makes this EP worth seeking out; its nonsensical hook—a chain of “do, do, doos,” passed off between the group’s male and female vocalists—has a habit of burrowing into listeners’ brainstems like some sort of alien life form. The disc also boasts an earlier single, “Girls Do Cry,” which is just as good, with a classic indie pop feel and a laid back playfulness that makes it hard to resist. (The grainy black-and-white music video could be covertly spliced into a late-1980s episode of 120 Minutes without many people picking up on it being out-of-place.)
At only four tracks, Awkward is a tease but at least lends itself to repeat listenings. Pound for pound, you probably won’t find another release this fall that’s nearly as plucky or as infectious. (www.facebook.com/sanciscomusic)
