Bobby and Sue are poised to escape their rink-a-dink Texas hometown for college, and when they do, they’ll leave B.J.—his best friend and her boyfriend—behind. Ever the companion, B.J. steals over 20 grand from his and Bobby’s employer, Giff (Mark Pellegrino), which the trio blows on a celebratory weekend. As soon as he notices his money’s gone, Giff unleashes his no-tolerance, murderous fury upon the youngsters, forcing them to steal from a local gangster in order to repay the filched funds.

Sibling directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins turn in a commendable effort with this indie crime thriller. Jeremy Allen White, Mackenzie Davis, and Logan Huffman deliver satisfying performances as the trio in trouble, navigating not only their increased entrenchment in criminal activity, but also social dynamics that threaten the group’s solidarity. Where the film falters is with freshman writer Dutch Southern’s script. Some scenes are stagnant and overwritten, and when the pacing should kick up a notch, Southern slows things by reiterating what’s already occurred for characters who didn’t witness said events. The plot is ultimately predictable, but the talent involved is worth tracking.
