Issue 1 of Citizen Rex opens the door to a futuristic society in which our lead character, Sergio Bauntin, exists. With autonomous robots operating among the citizens of some undisclosed and corrupt city, this first installment only leaves questions.

Sergio, a gossip journalist and self-proclaimed muckraker, finds himself on the lam from mobsters, truth takers and his own family—all for reasons yet to be determined.

Gilbert Hernandez’s highly stylized illustrations move the entire comic into a more cartoonish landscape, keeping the otherwise incredulous story somewhat feasible. And while I’m interested in figuring out what’s going on in Sergio’s fair city, I can’t be sure whether that’s a product of adroit storytelling or my own stubborn confusion. (www.darkhorse.com)
