The first album by Delta Spirit, Ode to Sunshine, contained a lot of energy, a nice antidote to some of the lethargic indie pop of the time. It was a pleasing enough record, but the follow-up, 2010’s History From Below, fell flat. Their third, self-titled, full-length finds the band unable to rise out of their own formulas.
The up-tempo numbers, once the band’s strength, feel forced. The opening “Empty House” sets a nice tone, but then “Tear It Up” suffers from a pre-programmed beat and a horrific chorus, “Just tear it up,” wasting a gorgeous, Talking Heads-esque guitar lick in the process. Those early songs come off like a Kings of Leon-style singles grab. Not that those songs are disingenuous. They simply don’t have much depth. The fine “Idaho” doesn’t rely on a ridiculous catchphrase to get the work done, and contains several nice shifts in tone and mood. Unfortunately, it is the exception. (www.deltaspirit.net)

history fell flat… and that album has some of the most timeless, compelling and impactful lyrics and melodies of any music in the last half century. I guess that means this shallower effort will win mainstream success. Can’t figure it out, but its right there.
