Douglas Dare at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, Netherlands, November 24th, 2014

Nov 27, 2014 Douglas Dare

The Paradiso is an old church turned music venue. So if I slip up and use cliché expressions like ethereal, divine, or otherworldly to describe Douglas Dare’s set there on Monday night, just remember—they started it, not me.

The singer/songwriter was in Holland to play the third of three nights in support of post-rock trio Fink. During his brief set, he admitted it was a dream of his to perform at the iconic venue. (He als strongly hinted that he’d love to play a headline set there one day.) It’s not difficult to see why. Flanked by large stained-glass windows which were lit to cast multi-colored shadows across the stage, cuts from his piano-driven debut full-length Whelm sounded deep and emotional. Having originally toured as a solo performer, Dare was joined by drummer/producer Fabian Prynn. A counterpoint Dare’s light alto, Prynn pounded away, adding a goose bump-inducing undercurrent to melancholy offerings such as “Caroline,” “Swim,” and “Whitewash.” Although far too brief, the performance was moody, magical, and—okay—maybe a tiny bit ethereal.
