Library music, also know as production music or stock music, is music that was created by anonymous studio players for music library labels that would lend the typically diversely styled compositions out to TV, radio, and film for advertisements, programs, or various background music needs. Often heralded by collectors and utilized for sampling (see The Chemical Brothers and U.N.K.L.E. for examples), library music has occupied a niche space since flourishing in the 1960s through the 1990s.

Studio G, which started in London before moving to Northampton, produced a stunning variety of library music during this time period, 27 pieces of which are collected here, compiled by Jazz Dispensary as an introduction to the medium. Jaunty flute sits aside happy melodic synth, lounge music, orchestral mini-suites, light jazz, and even some quasi-electronica and rock elements, as tracks segue seamlessly into one another without break. It’s enchanting mood music. A soundtrack to a nonexistent film. And the gorgeous gatefold packaging includes an informative essay by writer and DJ Ryan Jebavy as well as additional commentary by Saint Etienne founding member Bob Stanley (www.craftrecordings.com)
