Emily Owens, M.D.
CW, Tuesdays 9/8 Central
Oct 16, 2012 Web Exclusive
A high school masquerading as a hospital-that’s the idea behind Emily Owens, M.D. The title character, played by Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife, and Meryl Streep’s real-life daughter) was a loser in high school, albeit a high achieving one. Now, she’s a doctor, but she remains awkward and dorky, and is constantly reminded that she is still a loser. The hospital she is assigned to functions much like her high school, with the popular kids, the cute guys, the mean girls, and all the painful dynamics that go with that set-up. Pitifully, Emily’s internal monologue still sounds like she’s in high school. To top everything off, her high school nemesis is a resident at the hospital and they have the same relationship they had when they were teenagers. However, it turns out that Emily is a gifted doctor with a natural bedside manner who has the grudging attention of her harsh but talented mentor. The show doesn’t veer from the fluorescent-lit hallways and white lab coats of the hospital. It does, however, have a receiving line of heart-tugging patients who provide a feel-good vibe.
