Are they an indie-rock band playing prog, or a prog band playing indie rock? The Brooklyn-based Fang Island has a positive vibe to their sound that seems a bit incongruous compared to the bent-over intensity of many bands playing a progressive type of rock, but their debut album leaves no question that these guys could hold their own in a rumble with Porcupine Tree.
Massed group voices spring up everywhere on the disc, sounding a bit like Fleet Foxes during an unusually adventurous day in the studio, as the music seamlessly alternates between straight-up rock riffing and complex patterns. Guitarist Nicholas Andrew Sadler separately logs miles as a member of the band Daughters, and while his efforts here shine, they are only part of the intricate work where he’s joined by fellow Fang Island guitarists Jason Bartell and Chris Georges.
Fang Island sound just as arena-ready as they are club-ready, and with such a promising debut, the next record may well be their feel-good equivalent of 2112. (www.fangisland.com)
