The Meetings of the Waters
常に愛 TSUNENI AI
May 25, 2017 Fionn Regan
The Meetings of the Waters, Fionn Regan’s first album in five years, is a gathering place for his folk roots and sonic experimentations. While some of these experiments don’t work—the riotous “Babushka-Yai Ya” is messy and, ultimately, skippable and “Euphoria” lacks any exultation—others cast Regan in a new light.
“Cape of Diamonds” and “Book of the Moon” have Regan’s proven lyrical charms but are full of urgent and robust instrumentation while the album’s strongest track, “The Meetings of the Waters,” is a full folk song that dazzles with an undercurrent of skittering electronics, perhaps meant to replicate the moon’s rippling reflection on water.
To close the album, Regan bids us farewell with a sparse yet gorgeous 12+ minute ambient track called “常に愛 Tsuneni Ai,” a phrase meaning “Always Love” in Japanese. The song feels like you have being pushed in a small vessel out to a calm sea. Rocking back and forth, you enjoy the view but you’re already wondering what Regan’s next offering will be.
