Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled 1975 release represents a turning point. Guitarist Bob Welch was out, after three years and five albums with the band, and famously Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were in, cementing the final and best-known iteration of the band.

Upon the occasion of Fleetwood Mac’s 50th anniversary, Rhino has taken the opportunity to reissue this turning point album in high-fidelity, 180-gram vinyl remaster, cut from the original analog master tapes, presented in heavy glossy gatefold cover and with liner notes by Anthony DeCurtis that intersperse quotes from Lindsey Buckingham on the creation of the new Fleetwood Mac and the its self-titled debut.

First and foremost is the sound on this reissue. With its High Fidelity series, Rhino makes a serious case for the necessity of repurchasing albums that you may already own several times over, and this one is no different. The guitars pop. The vocals soar. The low end anchors distinctively. Previously missed details from your other pressings will suddenly be immediately apparent. Which is the mark of getting to the soul of an album.

And Fleetwood Mac is a true classic. “Monday Morning” opens the album highlighting the poppier sound of the new Mac. In Christine McVie’s “Warm Ways,” you can beautifully hear the guitar, bass, and drum interplay in ways you might not have so perfectly realized before. “Rhiannon” finds the driving bass prominent, allowing one to hear the oft-played hit anew. McVie’s velvety croon envelops in a warm embrace on “Over My Head.” The beauty of “Landslide” on this pressing is unrivaled. “World Turning” highlight’s Buckingham’s guitar mastery with drum beat thump jumps from the speakers.

Fleetwood Mac is unquestionably a masterpiece and the start of the new band lineup’s much-heralded future. Hear it here like never before. (www.rhino.com)
