It seems as though London-based art pop collective Flotation Toy Warning have been in a state of musical homeostasis for a while. It’s been 12 years since their brilliant debut and the music on their new album, The Machine That Made Us, sees them treading familiar waters.

A unique aggregate of strange, yet pleasant melancholic atmospherics and electronic orchestrations are pasted together with glitchy percussion, looped samples, and alluring organ chops. But while the first album was immediately ear-catching, this sophomore effort is more of an acquired taste.

The obscure lyrics and spooky vocals are as wonderful as ever, but the musical backdrop is less quirky and more buzzy and cacophonous. Still worth a listen for fans of inventive space pop. (www.flotationtoywarning.co.uk)
